Divergence Proposal for Manifest Gallery:
An artist’s skill set is rooted in craft; the journey from craft to art is an evolutionary process for the artist. Maslow’s theory of needs shows that when basic needs are being met, the possibility for more expansive cognitive functions which leads to a sense of aesthetic order as well as fulfillment and self examination becomes available. This exhibition will provide visual evidence of Maslow’s theory and displays the artist’s innovations and shifting interest on the aesthetics.
Divergence displays the functional and sculptural work of four ceramic artists as a way to inform visitors to the dichotomy of ceramics. Each artist brings to the gallery their individual explorations with the medium that showcase a broad range of work. Divergence seeks to challenge the notion of functional and sculptural artwork as a fluid transition that exposes two very diverse sides of a coin that inform one and other. Exhibiting artists functional and sculptural works together allows the audience to perceive the dualistic nature of the medium, while inviting investigation of the relationship of utilitarian and functionally impractical. .
The gallery space will be divided into quarters in which each artist will display their functional and sculptural artifacts. This juxtaposition highlights the diversity of the artists and their use of the medium. Simply by placing the functional work in the gallery and relating it to conceptual work, the audience is coerced into viewing both bodies of work by artists in an unconventional context that challenges the conventions functional ceramic works face in the art world.
