Statement: Flag Series

Flags represent a body of people that collectively grouped together due to ideology, geography, and commonality. Individuals who identify themselves with a particular flag are blanketed into a group whose representation changes within the context of the surrounding landscape. These objects are symbols of our connections and part of our identity. Disassembling two flags and configuring them into a single flag by sewing, braiding, and weaving intertwines the countries, and through this juxtaposition explore their relationship.

The union of two flags questions connections between the two groups, drawing upon their historical, economic, political, and geographic commonality or conflict. Craft processes are employed as a unifier, meant to entwine the emotional pull of the flags with craft objects' intimacy experienced through use: a hand quilted blanket or hand made cup. The reconfigured flags highlight the similarities and contrasts between groups with a present perspective meant to foster peace and unity.
