Statement: Premise of Value:
My current body of work investigates the value of handmade functional ceramic ware through comparisons with objects related to the domestic environment and references to commercial ware. The various display tactics’ intent is to provide an environment that questions the value of the handmade functional ware. The arrangements explore our preference while not clarifying what is better. Contrast of industrial versus the individual facilitates dialogue about the value of pottery as pieces that enrich our lives by personal contact.
Industrial ware is tied together with handmade ware through utility. The industrial pieces evolved as a way to produce objects efficiently; therefore lowering the cost and setting up guidelines to establish uniformity in designs. Benefits of commercial ware are lighter and more durable materials that are uniform in shape and size reducing the space required for storage.
Awareness of the handmade and the individuality it provides is the impetus for the body of work.
