Been thinking

I have been thinking about my proposal for the Michael Kohler Arts/Industry Residency, and wanted to share the project.

2x4s are symbolic of home construction and represent building. The sight of a home substructure is a story about individuality, growth, future, and security. A symbol of the American dream. My proposal is to make 8ft slip-cast porcelain 2x4s to erect a building. The shift in materiality, from wood to porcelain, makes a dense, strong, rigid, lasting, and resistant structure that is also fragile, inflexible, and compromising. The porcelain substructure will be a sculpture representing cultural strength and fragility that is a snapshot of past and present which questions the future. The facilities and knowledge of large scale porcelain manufacturing accessible through the Arts/Industry Residency will facilitate the experimentation necessary for creation of this large scale sculpture.
