I picked up the modular last night still warm. The porcelain posts went to Cone 9 and the Terracotta connectors were fired to cone 2. I was able to play a little with them last night but the pieces need a little work, I need to do some grinding to enlarge the holes in the connector pieces and see if I can sharpen the posts and give them somewhat of a point.

The kiln has been loaded and these pieces will be out hopefully Sunday around noon. Then later that day I will be attempting to build something. Huzzah!
The kiln misfired and the work has been loaded into another kiln that is going up as I type. If all goes right I will have the pieces by Wednesday I keep thinking about this idea ever since I brought it up during an interview at Northern Clay Center. There are sister cities that are a way to foster international communication and appreciation. I want this to happen with ceramic institutions throughout the world. I think it would broaden the horizon of what ceramic artists are doing globally and provide exposure to other forms of functional and sculptural ceramics. Highlighting the impact these artists have within their community and expanding understanding of ceramic work.
Now how to start Here is a project that I am currently engaging. It comes from a construction set that I had growing up and utilizes the history of ceramic as a building material and the reoccurring theme of playing into a dynamic sculpture. I will be attempting, when I get these fired to build the largest free standing ceramic sculpture.
This was an Installation I created with Jody Russ at the Lake Erie research center in Ohio, around 2002/3. The Title is "Dali's Cosmos" and the remembrance of walking through the space and the delight of watching them grow and evolve was a delight. I submitted photos to the blog Social and Political Art and they were loved. There is not any text with these images because they speak for themselves and are understood through personal interpretations, current news, and research into the country connections. Here is a link to my flags: http://www.socialpoliticalart.com/2012/09/michael-douglas-political-art-flags.html Am excited to take part in a wood firing at the University of Minnesota. Soon some new ceramic work will be up if all goes as planned.
